The Mending Machine

Custom-built in the United Kingdom and imported specifically for Perth, the Mending Machine is unlike anything else operating in Australia. Participants pedal a bicycle to generate the energy that powers a sewing machine, allowing another community member to repair or upcycle a garment on the spot.

Each participant typically spends 20–30 minutes at the activation time for a repair, a conversation, and a genuine shift in how they think about their clothes. Care to Rewear facilitates these conversations deliberately, using the shared activity as a gateway to deeper reflection on consumption and circularity. This project has been proudly supported by a WasteSorted Community Grant.

"There is no battery. When the pedalling stops, the sewing stops. The relationship between the two people is immediate and unbreakable."
